CON QUELLO PRINCIPALE ndt.]. What do you think of reports that Italy's Red
Cross hid -- treated insurgents and hid them from the U.S. as a payment,
sort of, for getting their hostages free?
MR. MCCORMACK: Yeah. These are issues -- questions. I've seen these reports.
These are questions for the Italian Government. My understanding is that
the Italian Government said that such things are not accurate, but again,
that's a question for the Italian Government to answer. You know, beyond
that, our views, the United States policies, with respect to negotiation
with hostage-takers are well-known. We don?t do it.
QUESTION: Well, have you --
MR. MCCORMACK: But let me just add this. This was -- the incident involving
Mr. Calipari and his tragic death is one that we understand was very painful
for the Italian people and certainly for his family. The United States and
Italy are very close friends. We're allies in the war on terrorism. Italian
carbonari [LAPSUS? REFUSO? C'E' SCRITTO "CARBONARI", MA IMMAGINO SI TRATTI
DI "CARABINIERI" ndt] have shed their blood in Iraq alongside American soldiers.
So, we appreciate the commitment and the efforts of the Italian Government
and the Italian people in supporting the Iraqi people as they build a new
country.
QUESTION: The Calipari issue has been only tangential to this, though, obviously.
MR. MCCORMACK: Right.
QUESTION: We don't -- have you asked the Italian Government yourself for
explanation? When you said, "These are questions for them," did you put the
questions to them, as the U.S. Government?
MR. MCCORMACK: No. I suggest if the press has questions related to these

MR. MCCORMACK: -- related to these news reports, I think that those are best
put to the Italian Government.
QUESTION: But does the U.S. Government have questions?
MR. MCCORMACK: I think this -- any questions related to this are best put
to Italian Government. Yes. I know you have an interest and it's ? oh, behind
you.
QUESTION: Have there been any contacts between the Secretary and her counterpart
in Italy --
MR. MCCORMACK: No.
QUESTION: -- about this revelation?
MR. MCCORMACK: No.

QUESTION: The Italian Government denied that it knew about it. It didn't
deny that it happened. I think it's taken -- they said they acted autonomously,
which -- it means they did it.
MR. MCCORMACK: You know, I just want to make clear that's your characterizations.

Il Dipartimento di Stato: noi non trattiamo
WASHINGTON - L?amministrazione Bush mostra apparentemente indifferenza alle
?rivelazioni? dell?ex commissario straordinario della Croce Rossa italiana,
Maurizio Scelli. Il Dipartimento di Stato ha definito «questioni del governo
italiano» le dichiarazioni di Scelli sulle cure mediche ad alcuni terroristi
in Iraq, all?insaputa degli Usa, legate alla liberazione degli ostaggi italiani.
«La nostra posizione sui negoziati con i terroristi è ben conosciuta», ha
puntualizzato il portavoce del Dipartimento di Stato Sean McCormack rispondendo
alla domanda di un giornalista durante il briefing quotidiano a Washington.
«La morte di Nicola Calipari resta un evento doloroso - ha aggiunto il portavoce
americano - Stati Uniti e Italia sono paesi molto amici. Gli italiani hanno
versato il loro sangue al fianco dei soldati americani». «Apprezziamo l?impegno
del governo e del popolo italiano per la libertà e per la sicurezza dell?Iraq»,
ha proseguito il portavoce del Dipartimento di Stato rifiutandosi di polemizzare
con Roma.
«Cosa pensa della notizia che la Croce Rossa Italiana ha curato insorti e
li ha nascosti agli Usa come pagamento per la liberazione degli ostaggi?»,
è stato chiesto al portavoce Usa durante il briefing. «Queste sono questioni
del governo italiano. Il governo italiano ha detto che queste affermazioni
non sono accurate. Ma la questione, di nuovo, riguarda gli italiani», ha
ribadito il portavoce. E ha ripetuto: «La posizione degli Stati Uniti sui
negoziati con chi cattura ostaggi è nota: noi non negoziamo», ha detto McCormack.
Tornando sulla tragica fine di Nicola Calipari, Sean McCormak ha ribadito
la versione americana: «E? stato un incidente, la sua morte è stata molto
dolorosa per gli italiani e per la sua famiglia - ha detto il portavoce -
Stati Uniti ed Italia sono molto amici. Siamo alleati nella guerra al terrorismo.
I carabinieri italiani hanno versato il loro sangue al fianco dei soldati
americani».
Lo scorso 30 aprile le autorità statunitensi resero noto il rapporto della
commissione d?inchiesta delle forze armate sull?uccisione del funzionario
del Sismi da cui risultava che i militari Usa non avevano alcuna responsabilità,
e contro di loro non doveva dunque essere preso alcun provvedimento disciplinare.
Dopo aver sottolineato che «è stato un tragico incidente», il rapporto affermava
che «l'indagine è giunta alla conclusione che il veicolo che si stava dirigendo
verso il checkpoint non ha ridotto la velocità fino a quando non è stato
raggiunto dal fucoco e che i soldati del checkpoint hanno agito secondo le
regole d?ingaggio». Il governo italiano non condivise le conclusioni del
rapporto Usa. Poi sulla vicenda è calato il silenzio.
